Looking for speed, strength, endurance or everything?
Every dog brings with it a unique set of genetic characteristics so when looking to breed, the matching of a sire to the appropriate bitch is a genuine challenge. Successful breeding requires an understanding of genetics, combined with a measure of good fortune but there are some basic rules that are followed and a lot of science and thought, should go into any potential mating.
Whether it is an even temperament, a keen interest in chasing, blinding box speed, genuine racing smarts, good endurance and strength, all dogs will have strengths and weaknesses, so it is desirable to breed from a well performed bitch that has the characteristics you want in their offspring.

It is not enough for a brood bitch to have a fast sibling. Unless the bitch herself could consistently do what you are after, or showed that she could do it on the track for a short period, that she chased and had pace, you probably wouldn’t breed with her. There have been exceptions of unraced bitches that have produced exceptional chasers, but as a general rule it is important to try and breed with stock that have proven themselves.

Once you have a brood bitch in mind, a stud dog must compliment her and any weaknesses in the bitch are the strengths you should be looking for in the stud dog.
