Life on the farm

Where did my greyhound come from is a great question but one some pet owners probably never really think about. But that gorgeous, gentle dog asleep on the couch or curled up in their bed didn't just miraculously appear. They are result of a lot of hard work and wonderful care from many people over many years.

To really know the pet greyhound and help them adjust into domestic life, it is important to understand their rearing, their life in a racing kennel and all the things that set them apart from other breeds.

Greyhounds are primarily working dogs, raised with their litter mates in isolated rural environments. As such they are removed from the noise and hussle and bussle of city life and not exposed to the same domestic influences as regular pet dogs as they grow up.

It is not unusual for litters to remain together on the property for many months and sometimes years bonding closely with their small circle of human helpers, the other animals on the property and the regulars they meet at the track. When it comes to retirement some will remain on the property they grew up on but the vast majority will have to transition to a strange new world called Planet Pet.
