Fact or fiction?
Once greyhounds are whelped and mum has sent them on their merry way, the pups begin their journey, playing in the runs and building up their strength and speed. When they are not running and chasing, they are sound asleep, recharging the batteries for their next burst of exercise or feeding time.
While not every greyhound gets to the track or is interested in racing, deep inside every greyhound (racing, show or pet) is the potential to run at speeds up to 75 kmh.
One of the biggest mistake any greyhound or sighthound owner can make is to be lulled into a sense of complacency. Just because your greyhound doesn't show interest in running or chasing, never make the mistake of thinking that they have lost the ability to run or that they will never be tempted to chase.
Inside every couch potato is a racing greyhound waiting to break free. In some dogs it may be laying dormant but the potential is still there. It is in their DNA and chasing is what nature designed greyhounds to do.
So for the safety of your pet greyhound always remember the potential to unleash enormous speed at a moments notice is ever present. Always walk them on lead and only ever exercise them off lead in suitable and legal, fully enclosed land.
