How to clip nails

Happy feet and clean dogs

In general greyhounds have little or no 'doggie' odour, so bathing is rarely necessary unless they happen to roll in something gross.

A weekly brushing with a "furminator" or hacksaw blade is usually enought to remove unwanted hair.

If your new greyhound has been outside and developed a thick "kennel coat", then brushing will be more regular until it is removed and revealing the normal thinner coat.

Microfibre cloths are very useful for wiping dogs down after brushing.

Fish oils from sardines etc are helpful in promoting a healthy coat.

The trimming of nails weekly will ensure the feet are kept in good health, without pressure on toes and ligaments. Scissor style dog clippers or a "Dremel" rotating file are two pieces of handy equipment for nail health.

When clipping nails, a regular trim will encourage the quik to retreat.  If you are uncomfortable clipping your dog’s nails, your vet can usually do this for a small fee or someone at your local greyhound walk, who is more experienced and comfortable with the task, will be able to help.
