Quality is everything in developing strong, confident and healthy pups

For greyhound pups to be given any opportunity to grow into elite racing dogs they must be given the very best of care and nothing is left to chance.

The first three months is the most important time for feeding and it is what is done during this stage that sets pups up for a healthy life ahead, ensuring they become healthy young adult dogs, physically ready for the demands of racing.

The best way to keep an eye on the pups is a daily weigh-in. That way you’ll quickly notice if one of them is failing to gain weight at the same rate as the others. In big litters there may not be enough milk production or teats for all the pups. The last thing you want is a fight for survival happening in your whelping box.

In these situations, or whenever mismothering occurs, supplementing the pups with puppy milk formula is the viable option.

Initially pups are fed by their mothers but as soon as their eyes are open (10 days) they are introduced to a bowl of milk with finely minced meat sprinkled through it.

While the pups are with their mums they are fed four times a day in a bowl, with a combination of milk, biscuits and milk, meat and milk, and a range of supplements.

Once they start to develop and move from the smaller rearing yards and go into the bigger yards,  they get three meals a day.

Over a six month period this gradually comes back to two meals a day but all the time they are fed only the highest quality food.
