How much, is too much?

Greyhounds are sprint animals and when racing they compete over distances between 300-700 m according to their abilities.

They are not endurance dogs and while they might enjoy a leisurely greyhound style "sniff and pee" walk for 30 minutes or more, when it comes to running their needs are quite minimal.

Exercising off lead (known as free galloping) should be done in a very controlled, fenced environment, free from obstacles and only with familiar dogs.

Slipping tracks are the perfect place to run your dog off lead but any private land with a smooth surface and good fencing can offer a great opportunity for a short run.

Remember your retired greyhound is a retired athlete and it is not necessary for a greyhound to run for more than a few minutes to get sufficient exercise.

If there is competition between the dogs, it is advisable that the humans monitor the activity closely to prevent over exercising or injury.

A warm up and warm down walk is always necessary to help prevent injury and fresh water should always be available.

Even in cold weather it not advisable to run dogs with coats or rugs on.

Greyhounds are also very susceptible to the heat, so exercising (walking or running) in temperatures greater than 25 C is not advisable.
